Herbs to Support Foaling Down – Natural Support for Mares
Foaling down is one of the most important times in a mare’s life, and ensuring she’s healthy, calm, and supported can make a big difference to both her wellbeing and that of her foal. Alongside good nutrition and sound management, a number of natural herbs can help support the mare’s body as she prepares for birth.
Here at Mullum Rural Co-op, we’re often asked about herbal options for supporting mares in late gestation. Below are a few commonly used herbs that experienced breeders and equine herbalists turn to during the final weeks leading up to foaling:
1. Raspberry Leaf
Often referred to as the go-to herb for late pregnancy, raspberry leaf is known for its tonic effect on the uterus. It can help support smoother, more efficient contractions and is commonly fed during the last 6–8 weeks of gestation.
2. Nettle
Nettle is a powerhouse herb often used to support mares in the final stages of pregnancy and post-foaling. Rich in iron, calcium, and vitamin C, nettle helps build blood, support milk production, and aid in recovery after birth. Its gentle tonic effect makes it a great addition to the mare’s diet in the last few weeks before foaling and through the early lactation period. Nettle is also rich in chlorophyll and is an excellent source of calcium, chromium, magnesium, zinc, cobolt, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin A, C and K.
3. Chamomile
Chamomile is a gentle calming herb that may help reduce nervous tension and promote relaxation. For mares that are a little anxious or sensitive, especially in the days leading up to foaling, chamomile can offer mild natural support. Chamomile supports nettle and Raspberry and can pass through the milk through the milk to the foal if both are stressed.
Important Notes:
- Always consult with your equine vet or herbalist before introducing any herbs, especially during pregnancy.
- Herbs should complement a good diet and not replace professional care or sound husbandry.
- Introduce herbs gradually and monitor your mare for any changes.
